Who? Janine Vangool, 36
Where? Calgary, Alberta, Canada (originally from the Saskatchewan prairie town, Saskatoon)
What do you do? I'm a graphic designer with a passion for publishing. After a dozen years of freelance design and working for clients, 2009 marks the first year that I have dedicated myself full time to self-initiated projects. I've always wanted to publish and design a magazine, so earlier this year I launched UPPERCASE, a magazine for the creative and curious. Deidre Martin is my co-editor. I also have a small gallery and shop from which I sell unique papergoods, books and host shows about illustration, design & photography.
What inspires you? I am inspired by the creative stories of others; when people set their own path or carve out a little niche for themselves. Many of my creative connections are through blogs, flickr and online community—I'm inspired on a daily basis by what others. The magazine has been a great way to collaborate with these people that I have admired.
Why are you fly? I love to see where ideas can take me. I hope that my books and magazines will be an outlet for other independent creatives.
Advice: Listen to your instincts. Remember that you're the one in charge of your own success.
