In a little neighborhood, off of a quaint and cozy cobblestone pathway called Liberties Walk lies a sophisticated flower shop known as Beautiful Blooms. The amazing space, which nearly has three walls of windows, is owned by Donna O'Brien who took her childhood love and adult passion for flowers and turned them into a blooming business (pun-intended!). I've been by a number of times, but this particular visit I got to speak with Donna about her background and her lovely boutique.
I find it so amazing how simple things we enjoy as children often become activities we cherish and often seek out as adults. Donna's relationship with flowers started when she was a young girl helping her mother in their English garden, but later she pursued a career in fashion merchandiser. She went to F.I.T., lived in NYC, traveled the world, but after taking a floral arrangement class she happened to find herself with a floral design company and the Beautiful Blooms boutique in Philadelphia.
The space is filled with an assortment of little succulents (which I purchased two of), orchids, and dried bunches of lavender mixed in with floral accessories like colorful vases, scented soaps and candles. It's a great place to purchase little additions to your home decor or to create a beautiful bouquet for your boo.
"What's your favorite flower," I ask Donna knowing it would be as difficult to answer as someone asking me what is my favorite typeface or design medium. She smiles and we both giggle because we both know it's almost impossible to choose. "You know right now I have to say peonies, they're beautiful and they remind me of spring and summer, but most of all they remind of the time I spent in my mother's garden." Sweet!
