Who? My nickname is SLY. It's not a character trait, just happens to be my initials! I'm 25 years old.
What do you do? Aside from working in the electronic trading industry, I also work as a stage manager and theater artist for theater productions and companies. When I'm not at either one of my jobs, I'm taking classes on sustainability (I have certification in green business); trying out new recipes (currently perfecting a homemade mouthwash); reading anything I can get my hands on (right now I'm in a reading challenge by BrownGirlSpeaks) or writing (there's always a piece I'm editing for performance).
After spending the entire month of April writing about the various issues surrounding sexual assault since it was National Sexual Assault Month, I have now begun working with a dear friend of mine on a new program called ROAR: Reaching Out After Rape which is an organization that seeks to educate, encourage and empower individuals and communities to put an end to all forms of sexual assault. We are currently working on our site over at IAMSURVIVOR.org and have various projects in the midst as we give birth to this organization.
What inspires you? Fairy Tales inspire me. The dark ones. Books inspire me. Has anyone else read Outliers lately? Anything related to art. Dance. Music. Theater. Literature. That is how I know I'm alive. That is how I connect and understand the world in which we live. People inspire me, especially my younger siblings. Great food, beautiful dresses, and Dr. Seuss inspire me. (March was Dr. Seuss month) Quotes, colors, and men's cologne inspire me as well. Any and everything can inspire me. Also red shoes, green purses, and elephants inspire me too. Apartment Therapy inspires me too. That website is like crack to me! But mostly what inspires me is socio-political theater. Knowing that there are forms of theater that have the ability to spur dialogue, incite debate, and actually change culture is phenomenal to me.Why are you fly? I'm fly because I'm always evolving. While the nature of who I am never changes, the expansion of my mind, my interest, my words, and my surroundings are always changing, always adapting. I am turned on by knowledge and always want to learn. I'm fly because I always have a book, journal and pen in hand.
Advice: Live consistently according to your convictions and take full responsibilities for your actions. It is possible for you to be who ever it is you want to be but it takes hard work, the ability to seize opportunities, and the ability to master yourself. I truly believe my favorite quote, "Everything you can imagine is real," Pablo Picasso. (I found it in a great book everyone should read, The Book of Lost Things.)
