Erté

Harper's Bazaar did a little feature on the fashion forward artist, Erté (1892-1990). He contributed to the latter part of of Art Nouveau and helped define Art Deco. Coincidentally, after reading the article I was assigned to read up on Erté on a website dedicated to his life's work. Check out more of his amazing work here.

Georg Olden

Why haven't I heard of this guy before?

One thing that really frustrates me about my discipline of choice, graphic design, is that there's not enough diversity. Far too often I am the only African American designer, or minority period, in a classroom, at a design conference, or in the workplace. So when I meet or learn of other minorities in the field, past and present, I am always very excited. Just yesterday I learned of graphic design pioneer, Georg Olden (1920 - 1975). During his career at CBS he designed some amazing television graphics when the idea of TV was still fairly new. He went on to work at the advertising agency, BBDO, and later became the first African-American to design a U.S. postage stamp. Are you kidding me? I've been in graphic design for nearly 10 years and I'm just now hearing about this guy? Shame, shame, shame!! To learn more about this talented and might I add handsome designer, click here.
