What's the best part about designing your own line?
Thinking up the concept is the most interesting part but it’s also so
much fun to go hunting for the pieces to bring the final vision into
fruition. Being independent designers is a lot of hard work but there
is absolutely nothing like investing in yourself and manifesting your
ideas from the visual, the stories, to the actual production of it.
And we feel blessed that our reservoir of inspiration seems limitless.
Where do you look or go to for inspiration to create your line?
Right now we’re looking at fractals found in nature and in some African
architecture. We planted a few early seeds for some of these concepts
in this current campaign, Nature Nerd. And generally, the fabric always
dictates what we do with it.
What's Fly about wearing a scarf from the MissBruno collection?
The fact that they are hand-cut and made from mostly recycled materials
and some have rare vintage details. But mostly they’re fly because
they’re flyyyyyyyy.
What are you currently working on for MissBruno?
We just released the final six pieces of our current 12-piece My
So-called Dress Limited Collection. We’ve realized that with every
piece we design we feel we show a different side of ourselves,
revealing a new layer of skin like an onion. But we’re also already
working on the next collection. And in September, we have something
really interesting coming out. We can’t say much more about it just
yet. We’ll just say it’s something that will send you deeper down the
rabbit hole of MissBruno’s alternate universe.:)
How is it being sisters and working together?
Sometimes we’re just so on the same wavelength, it’s scary. Probably
the best part is that because we’re sisters, there’s this kind of
shorthand between us so at times the ideas just flows almost like
osmosis. Other times it’s like, “Where’s the remote control on this
girl!” Yeah, sometimes we argue. But ultimately a disagreement will
incite a really positive and unexpected shift in direction for us.
What advice can you give other young women looking to start their own line of scarves and/or clothing?
Find something that is all your own. Really hone your craft until it
is completely unmistakably your voice and no one else’s. Also, think
about your peers and your predecessors. Find new ways to share
resources and knowledge with them. Find something that is most dear to
you and yet connects with others. Join a collective that shares your
same views or start your own. Know that you can literally do whatever
you want in this life, even if you have a little bit of capital
initially. In this business, tenacity is everything.
